Ectopic Pregnancy: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

What is ectopic pregnancy?

Ectopic pregnancy is when a pregnancy grows outside of the uterus. Generally pregnancy takes place inside the uterus but in case of ectopic pregnancy the fertilized egg implants itself anywhere outside the womb. The embryo is not developed into a baby as the fallopian tubes are not large enough and is incapable to support the growth of baby.

Generally it is advised to treat the situation of ectopic pregnancy at the very earlier stages. Ectopic pregnancy can cause infection, internal bleeding and sometimes leads to the mother’s death. Untreated ectopic pregnancy can have severe results, so it should be treated just after the diagnosis.

Causes of ectopic pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy can be caused due to several reasons however there are no specified ones but majorly an infection or inflammation of the fallopian tube can cause the blocking of fallopian tube. Scar tissue from a previous infection or a surgical procedure on the tube may also impede the egg’s movement. Other factors like abnormal growth or a birth defect can also result in an abnormality in the tube’s shape as well as a previous surgery in the pelvic area may cause adhesions.

Symptoms of ectopic pregnancy

Symptoms of ectopic pregnancy are quite same as normal pregnancy like missed periods, nausea, fatigue, vomiting or breast tenderness. However, there are symptoms showing your need for treatment or diagnosis. Some of them are-

  • Vaginal bleeding- Vaginal bleeding is the irregular bleeding from vagina and often leads to severe issues. The bleeding starts and stops irregularly and is bright or dark red in color. Sometimes, women are confused for bleeding to be of normal periods and this causes several issues.
  • Abdominal pain- Another symptom of ectopic pregnancy is the one sided abdominal pain. You may feel severe pain on one side of the abdominal.
  • Bowel and shoulder tip pain- You may feel a severe bowel pain while urinating, shoulder pain is also common in case of ectopic pregnancy.
  • Diarrhea and vomiting- Another major symptom is vomiting and diarrhea. You can feel illness and weakness during the period.

Ectopic pregnancy treatment

There are less chances of surviving ectopic pregnancy because a fertilized egg cannot grow fully outside the uterus. The treatment is important soon after the diagnosis and can be done in various ways, generally medicines and surgery are the best treatment methods to reduce or remove the harmful chances.

Treatment using medicine-

Methotrexate, a medicine used for treatment of ectopic pregnancy is generally suggested by the doctors. Using this medicine the fertilized egg’s cell stops to grow and the body absorbs the already developed cells avoiding any damage to the fallopian tubes.

Treatment using surgery-

Treatment using surgery includes process called laparoscopy. The process involves making a small cut near the belly button and removing the pregnancy with the help of a surgical tube that has a small camera attached to it. Some surgeries results into starring of fallopian tube, as a piece of fallopian tube is removed from the body.

Getting pregnant is every woman’s dream and sometimes the pregnancy can be quite difficult. It always depends on your health condition and the nature of your fallopian tube. If you are facing complications using pregnancy you can go for Assisted reproductive technology and other processes like IVF and IUI.
